COHORS TRES ITALICA well, we started the website, put up a couple of
photos and links. In the real world, we were
building pila or Roman missile weapons for the
event at Lafe, Arkansas today. The weapon is
designed to be thrown at people as an armor
penetrating weapon. Peter Connolly said they
weren't supposed to be used only to take out a
shield but actually were meant to kill the enemy.
Since our pila will be used in mock battles, we
don't want to kill people, so we put a tennis ball
on the end of some high pressure PVC, and attach
it to a golf tube. When the weapon hits a target,
it will become unusable because a balsa wood pin
in the handle will break. Until the balsa wood
pin is replaced, the pila will hopefully be
unusable, like the originals.
